Luxembourg’s latest public holiday ‘Europe Day’ will be on Monday 9 May 2022.

Time to look at the languages spoken in Europe. 

  • Over 200 different languages are spoken in Europe 
  • The EU has 24 official languages 
  • Most Europeans speak a Romance, Germanic or Slavic language 
  • Basque, Greek, Lithuanian and Icelandic are among the oldest languages in Europe and the world 
  • Some languages are only spoken by a small group of people like: Faroese, Cornish or Sorbian
